How do I make my van more secure?
So simple, so easy…
It’s something every van driver wonders, so we thought it was only fair to share our simple top tips on how to make sure your van is as secure as possible. Vanarama’s Laura Day reports.
We understand that your van is your livelihood, so if the worst should happen and your tools got stolen, this really would be your worst nightmare. So, what precautions can you take to keep your van and its contents safe?
Empty your van at night
It sounds like a pain, but this is an important one. Insurance policies often cover your van alone and not its contents. The trouble is, the contents are usually the most difficult to replace. So, by taking 5-10 minutes to unload your tools at the end of the day, you could be saving yourself some serious hassle in the future.
It’s simple – the older the van, the easier it will be to break in to. Most modern vans come with good safety and security features, so always have a look at the standard spec to see exactly what it comes with.
Don’t forget, there are some cheap security measures that you can put in place yourself to maximise your van’s security – such as alarms, steering locks, deadlocks or immobilisers.
It’s always a good idea to park your van on your driveway and not on the road, because this is an immediate deterrent for thieves, as they are more exposed. Getting motion-activated lights fitted outside your house will also let you know if anyone approaches your van.
These are the basic ones but can be so easy to forget. 1) Don’t leave your van unlocked/unattended at any point and 2) make sure you keep your windows closed, even if you think you’re only going to be a moment away from your van because that’s all the time it takes for a thief to strike!
